What is Aikido ?

Aikido
The Way of Spiritual Harmony
Samadhi dojo (place of enlightenment)
with Gerard Menzel

Morihei Ueshiba founded Aikido during this century as a way of purifying the body and spirit through the ancient system of martial virtue called Budo. He shaped Aikido to reflect a way of peace rather than combat and taught his students to be warriors of peace,........ ‘protecting every living thing in the universe.’ It is a disciplined martial art based on ancient principles, with a new vision for humanity, .... " to live in harmony and universal love. " ( Ueshiba)

It’s a devastatingly powerful, beautiful and has been described as a spiritual art. It uses spherical movement based on the laws of nature which were mysteriously revealed to the founder by the ancient Budo spirits of Kumino.  It is based on three symbols, the Circle; which is breath or Ki life force, the Triangle; being humanity yin/yang and the Square; our earth. This discipline teaches us to refine our inner self by relaxing the mind and body and heightening our perceptions, timing, stamina, balance and stability. It modifies our fearful psyche into a more open and fearless acceptance of life as we welcome change and challenges.
Below; The Founder Mr Ueshiba

The movements rely on utilizing the partner’s energy and redirecting it more advantageously so no conflict arises. It avoids brute strength and stresses flow, balance, timing, leading, spiritual harmony called Aiki. Consequently women, children and artists, dancers, are attracted to its Yin soft flowing nature. As one trains sensitivity to touch is developed together with, timing, centering and creative power based on self confidence develops. Life becomes more spontaneous, a place to create and play. The ego dissolves naturally as there is no competition.

‘Aikido is balance; hard, soft, powerful and varies according to your abilities.’
It is done in pairs on a mat and includes rolling spherical turns, maneuvering with strikes and holds, applying hold downs, and throwing your training partner who learns to receive the above techniques and relax. Both partners grow in the process of Aikido. Co-operation, flexibility, attunement with the partner are reflections of the warriors dance
Swords (boken) and sticks (jo) are used to refine Ki as one studies basic movements, the disarming of a partner, and stick forms which ultimately lead to free movement. The art shows us spiritual etiquette, respect for trainees, the teacher, the founder and the dojo ( place of spiritual training.) This leads to a respect, love and awe for all of creation, ‘ from the smallest seed to the grandest mountain.’

For the beginner it takes time to mould into the above principles, relax soften the body, flow, become flexible but Aikido is a lifelong endless investment in greater peace, fulfillment, personal discipline and power. It opens the way to a "new creativity." Aikido The way of martial Power thru Harmony.

What makes Aikido so unique ? ......Martial power plus.. Spiritual Awareness
It allows you to live in a violent world free of fear and tension. It is both a martial art which can be practiced with power and relaxarion. The student never actually hits, kicks or punches another student. When seen the art can appear extremely devestating or very elegantly graceful and unoffensive, depending on the feeling and experience of the people.

It can be experienced at any age level and be a benefit to all according to one's ability and needs. It is totally without competition, tournaments Women, children naturally enjoy the art because there is no need for strength and learn naturally to yield . The basics of the art have been developed into different styles after the founder passed away.

Morihei Ueshiba the founder of Aikido developed the art from the ancient traditions of Japanese Budo the ancient warrior code. He felt that Budo rather than being brutal was rather a philosophy of harmony and peace which stood to serve humanity by protecting and preserving all living things. It trains martial awareness, agility, power and stamina, fitness, courage, intuition.
What are the movement of Aikido?. O Sensei said the art of aikido is as flexible and open as the universe and the movements are infinite.

The founders son says;' Budo is to be realized in the quest for perfection as a human being, both in mind and body... and through constant training the individual Ki (life force) merges with the universal Ki of the cosmos'.
Also........"In Aikido there are no forms and no patterns. Natural movements are the movements of aikido. Its depth is profound and it is inexhaustible." O Sensei Founder (inset)

Philosophy of the founder & Spirituality
Divine

The divine does not like to be shut up in a building. The
divine likes to be out in the open. It is right here in
this very body. Everyone of us is a living universe, a
living shrine.
Humility
When you bow deeply to the universe it bows back to you;
when you call out the name of God it echoes inside
you............. Your spirit is the true shield.

Opponents confront us continually, but actually there is no
opponent there. Enter deeply into an attack and neutralise
it as you draw that misdirected force into your own sphere.

Contrasts
Each day of human life contains joy and anger, pain and
pleasure, darkness and light, growth and decay, each moment
is etched with natures grand design . Do not try to deny or
oppose the cosmic order of things.

Simplicity
Economy is the basis of society. When the economy is stable
the society develops. The ideal economy combines the
spiritual and the material and the best commodities to trade
are sincerity and love.

Light

world; Illuminate the path according to your inner light.
Unity
In extreme situations the entire universe becomes our foe;
at such critical times unity of mind and technique is
essential . Do not let your heart waver.

Blend
In our techniques we enter completely into, blend totally
with and control firmly an attack. Strength resides where
one's ki is concentrated and stable; confusion and
maliciousness arise when ki stagnates.

Tao ''The best attitude is like water. Water is a
positive benefit to all things without competing with
things. It seeks out those places abominated by man.
Thereby it approaches the Tao.For one's dwelling choose
ground well. In cultivating one's mind/heart search the
deep well. In speaking know how to keep one's word. In
governing, rectify the self well. In serving do one's best.
In acting choose the time well. Only by not competing can
one be without reproach." Ch.8 Tao Teh Ching, Lao Tzu
Moving Zen; One has to accept that in this world there are
millions of objects and that each one is, respectively the
entire world... this is where the study of Buddhism
commences. When one comes to realize this fact, (one
perceives that) every object, every living thing is the
whole even though in itself does not realize it. As there
is no other time than this, every being , time is the whole
of time; one blade of grass, every single object is time.
Every point of time includes every being and every world.
Zen master Dogen  'Three Pillars of Zen' Roshi Philip
Kapleau.

Mind
Your mind essence is not subject to birth or death. It is
neither being nor nothingness, neither emptiness nor form
and color. Nor is it something that feels pain or joy. If
you think of nothing, wish for nothing, want to understand
nothing, cling to nothing and only ask yourself; what is the
true substance of the mind and of this one who is now
suffering ? Ending your days like clouds fading in the sky,
you will be eventually freed from your bondage to endless
change. Bassui ..to a dying man

The children benefited greatly from seeing an artist at work and from working alongside him. It appeared to awaken something in each one of them. The program was also a great benefit in a cultural sense for it has helped children examine their own prejudices and learn something about another culture. ........ The program was indeed a "a many splendoured thing" It helped to break down barriers of prejudice....

Oriental Brush painting -  Sumi-E (ink / painting)

The origins of Japanese Zen and brush painting lay in Chinese calligraphy and Zen arts. It is fun and simple to learn the basic steps. It can be a Zen ritual to center the mind, rid one of distraction and develop spiritual calm. Black ink is robustly painted on rice paper spontaneously as feelings guide the brush. Sumie is very free and informal ..and fun ! It improves visualization, gives an appreciation of nature. We paint nature, birds, landscapes, dragons, flowers, mountains, and bears. Gerard can also incorporate Haiku poetry into the classes and explain the historic / arts background of this poetry.

Focus curriculum; Visual arts, religion, history, Asia, Japan. Its fantastic fun and helps kids focus, find their creativity and release emotions - China Japan

Aikido demonstration by Gerard.

Aikido - ' The way of spiritual harmony '
non-violence in movement. - Japan
Aikido teaches the way of non-violence and harmony between 2 bodies. It is like a dance of harmony and balance. It is round and relaxing as movements are based on the Japanese principles of Budo. It includes graceful stretches and warm ups - breathing - smooth movements in pairs, learning to be gentle, soft and still being centered, confident and peaceful. Japanese sword and stick demo is included. Gerard has studied with famous Aikido teachers from Japan and runs his own school.

Aikido For Kids

Aikido is a way of non-violence and is a special way for kids to find themselves via movement. It trains the body to be supple and flexible and the mind to flow with things around it in life. Children learn to defend themselves and have confidence in their personal strength without being aggressive.

It is a perfect way to keep fit, achieve mental calm and train the body to be alert in times of stress. It does this by working together in pairs where the opponents force is redirected into neutral ground and the partner rolls gracefully away or is taken peacefully to the floor and held in a pin. It is totally non aggressive and the aim is to find inner strength and peace through a real solid martial training of the body and the mind.

Artist in Schools residence St Bernards Essendon 2005

Children learn to find their own self confidence and release tension. They learn not to fear tense situations and to react in a calm manner. It is suitable for both girls and boys because it is soft. Most of all it is fun, non competitive and fosters a community spirit of caring for others, including oneself.

Curriculum focus; Excellent for interaction skills, teaching non-violence, mental &physical balance, dance, discipline,
Japanese ritual. Health, fitness social skills, culture and environment.
Aikido swords are based on the Katana Samurai sword.

Tabla Indian Drums
Indian drums are the most sophisticated of any drumming systems in the world. They have a verbal language of their own, a mathematical basis and a tradition of teaching. The variety of Indian drums is vast and it is a delight to the ears to hear the subtle nuances, infinite rhythms, speed and trance inducing beat of the skins as it is first recited and then played. The number of rhythms includes over 300. The formal teaching by the Guru is a tradition in itself as Gerard has undertaken in India. He explains the history and tuition system. He is one of the few Australians who has studied at a classical Indian music college.
Gerard showcases many Indian drums including the pakawaj, nal, cymbals, harmonium organ and the flute. We sing ancient temple songs used for ritual and meditation Bhakti Yoga.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan;

Translation from Chinese

Tai Chi- Supreme ultimate, grand terminus, supreme ridge pole

 Chuan (fist or group, )

Picture Gerard in Yang shuo China 1997 and 1999 beside the Li river Huang Shuo
a picturesque haven for artists. On the right side top is Thomas Hu my Chen style teacher and friend. Bottom right is Sifu from New Park in Taipei who taught me the fan.

It has been translated as supreme ultimate soft fist. This moving meditation from China has stood the test of time over the centuries and survived due to its unique philosophy. It is a series of flowing movements called a form. There are various forms and schools. Gerard Teaches the Yang form and the Wu form plus various advanced sword, cutlass and fan forms.

The principles of the art are simple but require diligent practice to attain near perfection. Taoism, which is the philosophy behind the art, says there can be no absolute perfect but a relative perfection as consciousness keeps searching for improvement. The movements are circular and spiral. The breath is settled in the abdomen and allows us to free ourselves of unnecessary thoughts. The body is held upright and all the joints move freely as we centre our feet on the earth. This is our important link with Mother Nature. From this position of stability and flexibility we can move slowly in rhythm with the breath. It is excellent as a meditation and for improving posture, breathing, circulation, and low blood pressure. Picture Gerard in Yang Shuo China 1999.

The movements of Tai Chi are steady like the flow of the river of life

This prepares us for life as we practice each day, blending with the subtle emotional and physical forces, which are in everlasting change. The philosophy of the art says that NOW is the only constant entity, which one can be sure of and that too is

Nature Changes in a piecemeal way and this is one of the laws of the universe. Tai Chi is in harmony with the natural laws and allows us to change slowly. The movements are designed to blend us to slow, steady growth. All the movements unfold from one to another and are linked with one another just as the elements of earth, water, wind and fire are joined to form the wholeness of the forests, the oceans and the mountains.

Tai Chi is the lifetime study of personal energy called Chi, which is the essence of everything alive. In that process we learn better concentration, centering, self discipline, the relativity of all life and spirituality. The art is also a self-defense which is an optional side of its study and is among the most respected Chinese martial arts, which is taught only after years mental straining and hard styles (kung Fu).

Gerard teaches Chi Kung exercises to beginners and then the various short forms then moves to the longer Yang and Wu sets. The majestic long sword form (dragon spirit), powerful cutlass forms (tiger spirit) and scholars fan form are taught thereafter.

Travels
Taipei China 1984

I spent a brief training period in 84 in this fabulous city of interesting people studying in the New Park and with Master Wong.

Sifu in the new park taught me the fan a style from the kung fu system while Master Wong taught the old Yang style Tai Chi.  The latter had many overseas students especially from France and I studied by night and in the early morning the fan form.

I found the fan with its kicks and round flowing movements very interesting and a challenge and it is always a joy to practice. I only tried to teach it to one student in Adelaide who last seen was in a monastery in Thailand studying Buddhism.

When one entered the trainings master Wong would give the student a Tai Chi  name  and mine was a splendid on "drunken dreamer".  and here is the membership form for you to see.  Teacher was very old and in his 80's then but very spritely and fit.  He was also a big man for a Chinese.

Sumi ink block

Sumi ink sticks

Sumi is the elongated moulded ink stick we use to grind on our suzuri (similar to a mortar).  They are the traditional way of carrying ink before plastic bottles were introduced.  Sumi sticks are famous for producing the monochrome ink painting from Japan and China with its five shades of colour.

Sumi is made from the soot of pine branches selected from trees in the beautiful groves on the mountainsides close to Nara and Suzuka. From Autumn to early Spring, the air is cool and dry; the temperature, ideal. The pine soot mixed with a binding agent hardens properly only from mid October through mid May. Later the ink continues to age across seasons and years.1.

An ink artisan combines pine with sesame, rapeseed or another natural oil for the sumi base product. The soot from the pine is combined and kneaded with nikawa, the binding agent made from animal bone. The kneading process is crucial and Knowledge about the amount of moisture and air to remove from the kneaded mixture is imperative. Family secrets related to the ink making process are stringently guarded as to the amount of moisture or water and the hand positions for kneading. The end produce has a delicate fragrance.

The shape of the ink is made with wooden moulds as the  ash-dries, then it is later wrapped in straw and hung to age. (up to 10 years) Ink that is of exceptional quality is polished with a shell to give it a fine luster.
